View Full Version : mr2 and toyota techgeek
boo i have one of those already, i need any 4age or variant of the 4a. I dont care if its an 4afe or 4ag or 4agze thats in running condition, price im willing to pay dependant on engine type.
also interested in a 4efte from a turbo starlet
I think im going to do the starlet swap into the MR2 technically its the same engine i dont see why it wouldnt work.

not really.
If they can do a 4efte swap in a corolla which uses the 4age, I dont see why it wouldnt fit in the MR2.

it's a step-down from 1.6 to a 1.3l. i love the 4EFT-E, but just not for an AW11. so many better choices.
yeah its a step down but it is a step up in performance. plus I have a base engine that is setup for boost already instead of chancing it with the 4age. True I could go with a 4agze but those cost like 400 dollars more. and make ~about~ the same horsepower as the 4efte.

wow. i TOTALLY disagree.
Im saying its a step up in performance compared to the 4age. Sure a 4agze would be nice and put out about 140 hp but it cost anywhere from 700-1500 for a good used one then I have to swap my hood as well, I can buy a low miles 4efte for about 500 and make about 130~140.
4efte is already a turbo platform so it is setup for boost unlike the 4age.
with the 4age, Im chancing anything without actually taking the engine apart and rebuilding it with lower comp pistons and some sort of fuel management.
Plus mods arent cheap or readily available for the 4age. Ive seen a turbo manifold for the 4age sure but it was 300+ dollars for just it. adjustable Cam gears 200 dollars. Cams 150+ a piece. Exhaust anywhere from 300 to 1000 dollars. Then actually having it in stock or finding it, Good Luck.
At least with the 4efte I can upgrade the turbo or parts of the turbo system to boost the performance and it doesnt cost very much for turbo upgrades. Boost Controller 5, BOV 20, turbo ~150, downpipe 100, exhaust 100, injectors ~200.
Dollar for dollar I think the 4efte would be a better platform for better horsepower compared to the 4age.
Now if I had 1000 dollars to drop into an engine all at one time now id probably go 20v 4age but seeing this is a budget build with cost coming over a period of time it looks like the 4efte is the winner. But I still have to research doing this kind of swap before I do anything.

well, believe what you like.
i don't worry about parts availability. if i can't find it, i just make my own. exhaust too. parts catalogues are ok. most stuff is just bling anyway. i'm making more hp/tq @ the wheels than what was advertised for a new engine (i have over 189K) back in 1989. i got tired of the junior baller-grade stuff years ago. one day you'll know the feeling of satisfaction when you learn the right stuff. until then i will just beg to differ. oh! plus of course there's the fact that i was a TRD, USA contingiency racer until they discontinued the program, so pretty much i'm connected! ;)

what size engine is it? and who is this so i can contact him about some pieces.no offense, but if you know so much Toyota, you would've/should've known which engine was in there.

I didnt claim to know everything toyota. The MR2 was my first import. im more of an FBODY/muscle car person.
Are you going to grind out a cam or cnc some cam gears ToyotaTechGeek? Fabbing parts requires time which I dont have much of but when I do have time I can also just make my own exhaust/header/turbo manifold. I was just pointing out that parts are not cheap for the 4age. Sure it could make more horsepower just on the fact that it is a larger displacement engine but it is going to cost me more than what I want to spend, plus making more horespower with a smaller engine just give you more to boast about when you beat someone. Ask the mustang guys they can tell you all about it (on there good days ;) jk)

just an honest question: you're 19 and have no time? are you serious???
but, in other aspects, you seem to 'act' as if you know everything pertaining to the 4AG-E. i don't believe you even can scratch the surface. just my observation.
college & work, sir. you try doing both. and manage to put all your time and money into your daily driver.

Ask the mustang guys they can tell you all about it (on there good days ;) jk)further (now that i have a little more time), just because you are traditional;ly an Fbody or domestic guy doesn't mean you can't or don't have sense when it comes to imports. sure, there are tricks to be learned, but in the end, it's pretty much all the same; internal combustion engines are still 4 strokes with exception to the wankel (but i don't exactly know too much about rotaries except for sorta how they work and what to 'basically' do to improve the mighty 1.3). hell, i learned engine building in a barn out in the country where the only thing the guy really enjoyed building was domestic stuff. i just happened to be there because he invited me to learn! now, as for cam gears, sure, you can CNC, but why bother unless one is going to mass produce them? if you look at some of my engine pics, you'll see in one picture that the gear behing the submarine periscope glass that there is a polished cam gear under there...it's adjustable. no CNC, but i don't know many who have a Bridgeport let alone a CNC vert. mill in their garage. i have a Bridgeport.

Come on boys, lets play nice. Everyone on this forum has their own individual strengths and weaknessess. We all have differing levels of knowledge and expertise in areas that interest us. I know very little about imports at this time in my life, but have some knowledge about F bods cause this is what I race. The import thing is getting ready to change for me cause I am getting ready to take delivery of a toyota 86 MR2. Needs a little work, not much, so I'm gettin ready to dive in. Knowing me I won't leave well enough alone and will start modding it. I will probably start a thread on tuesday to ask tech questions and seek yall's advise. Please help an old man out, especially Toyota Tech geek and MR2.
