Distributor Question

So its been a while since the original MR2 has been down, but things are starting to improve for me so it looks like Ill have it going again soon (coughs). anyways question I have is when I checked my engine my distributor cap was melted (bottom part of the cap was warped), what would cause this? My first impression was that when my engine overheated the plastic melted with it but I wanted to know if this could be caused by something else, seeing I just replaced the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires about 500 or fewer miles before the engine crapped out on me.

Melted due to heat would show no evidence of burn on the cap thus no minor electrical fire. No black residue, then excessive heat may be your culprit for sure as the top part of the distributor may have overheated and/or the engine temp rose excessively and caused the cap to melt and warp on the bottom.
