when i get back i'm going to get a civilian M4 that shoots a 7.62 instead of a 5.56. throw me some brands to get and to stay away from. right now i'm thinking armalite.... any thoughts?
also a good scope to get that wont lose its zero every time i shoot it.

I don't know too much about those but I've never heard anything bad about an Armalite. I say go for it

Armalite is good but expensive as hell, colt is good, bushmaster great for the price (cheap), i'd stay away from DPMS, yankee hill

larue tactical obr/ end thread.

seriously, if i were to but a 7.62 rifle this would be the one. you will pay more but the quality is unmatched. i have some of larue's products and they are top notch. later this year i'll be buying one of the stealth uppers and a stealth lower for my next build. i was gonna buy one last year but i ended up buying a bcm upper to go on my spike's tactical lower.

what will you be using it for?

you are gonna want something that will stand up to abuse and be mil spec quality. not dpms trust me.

what length barrel do you want? go to www.larueobr.com and look around. they also have the optic mounts for the obr.

i want the exact M4/AR platform with about a 14" barrel. it's what i'm used to. i'm sticking with it.... just a bigger caliber obviously. plus that's way to much damn money to spend on something i'm just going to use for playing/home protection.

Hey Rumblebox why dont you try something like this:
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j90/jitsumania/Rifle%20album/SWMP15-2212.jpg
This is a Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22. It is equiped with Carry handle (integrated rear sight with windage and elevation adjustment) with front Iron sights, Both green and red lasars, tactical 5 position folding foregrip, 130 lumen tactical flashlight, and red and green dot optics.
Best of all it is built off AR platform but chambered for .22 cal. You can shoot all day long and never break the bank due to the cost of ammo these days. Many LEO's are using these as training tools due to the ammo cost effectiveness. Think about it!!!!
How many times will you use that 308 for target shooting vs actual self defense as a civilian. I can Kill anything with that 15-22. Firepower can also be measured by how many rounds I can put into my target.

you wont find one with a 14 inch barrel. plus thats considered an nfa weapon. you can get a 14.5 inch with the fixed extended flash hider in 5.56 but nobody that i know of makes it in 7.62. i think that para usa makes a 7.62 rifle with a 16 inch but its not m4 style if i remember correctly.

cost is something that goes hand in hand with quality. as far as home protection, you dont want to use 7.62 anyways. that bullet is gonna go through too many walls if you miss and you also have to worry about over penetration. im seriously debating if what i myself am using is too big. its not just putting down the suspect that you have to worry about. what about the family next door? what about your children in the next room? you can play out scenarios in your head all day long but they will never go as planned.

if you want cheap go with dpms, but you will regret it.

ive been planning on getting one of these and building it exactly like what i have so i can go to the range without spending 400 bucks at the range every time i go.

ETA: rick i understand what you are saying, but i would go with something larger for self defense. is that .22 gonna knock down the perp before he plants that knife in your wifes throat?

NO it wont!!!!! Thats why I have 2 Glocks (26+19) with 9mm Jacketed hollow points and plenty spare clips for tactical or combat reloads !!!
That perp better bring something a bit more substantial than a knife ;)

pure power performance

ha ha ha, knowing you rick, you wouldn't need a gun at all if all he had was a knife. that would almost seem unfair. :)

You got the wrong Glock bro, better take it back quick and get a refund! ;)
All kidding aside, the use of a long gun, IMO is not an advisable tactical choice in limited space. Yes the Black rifle is good for urban warefare but a larger caliber handgun with JHP's to prevent exit wounds or external wall shoot through thus preventing collateral damage seems like a better choice for home defense. The rifle is intimidating indeed but much harder to manuever with, especially having to shoot around obstacles, corners, etc.
It usually boils down to preference and ability with weapon of choice. I still really prefer a stick and knife for that up close and personal moment!!!!!
